After the second Obama-McCain debate, the TV cameras showed John McCain giving Barack Obama a pat on the pack; Obama then offered a handshake to John McCain. McCain deflected the offer by pointing Obama's attention to his (McCain's) wife, Cindy, whose hand Obama then shook. Here it is:
Viewing the debate coverage, I noticed it, briefly registered it as odd, but didn't think anything more of it. Maybe it means nothing (although it has provoked some debate). However, at least one writer managed to connect it to larger discourses and codes concerning masculinity, and the result is some nice cultural commentary. Here it is: http://www.theroot.com/id/48400.

THE PRACTICE BLOG
The goal of being alive is to figure out what it means to be alive, and there is a myriad of ways to deduce that answer; I just happen to prefer examining the question through the context of Pamela Anderson and The Real World and Frosted Flakes. It's certainly no less plausible than trying to understand Kant or Wittgenstein. And while half of my brain worries that writing about Saved by the Bell and Memento will immediately seem as outdated as a 1983 book about Fantasy Island and Gerry Cooney, my mind's better half knows that temporality is part of the truth.
